The drum spins, the cycle finishes, everything seems fine, yet nothing is dry. People assume the whole machine is shot. It rarely is. Before you call anyone or start shopping, work down this list in order.
First, a thirty second triage
Two quick questions narrow it down fast. Does the drum spin and the dryer otherwise run normally, just no heat? If yes, you have a heat supply problem, not a motor problem. Is it gas or electric? Look behind the dryer: a flexible black or yellow line means gas, just a fat power cord means electric. The heat sources and the failures are completely different, so this matters. The model number plate inside the door will confirm it.
The cause nobody wants to hear first: a clogged vent
This sits at the top on purpose. It is both the most common reason a dryer stops heating and the one people are most reluctant to believe, because they want it to be a cheap part. Often the truth is a lint packed vent and a five dollar fix.
Lint builds up in the vent duct over months and years, airflow drops, and the dryer cannot push hot moist air out. Heat and moisture get trapped, clothes come out damp, and that trapped heat trips a safety device called the high limit thermostat, which shuts the heat off to protect the machine. The dryer stops heating, but it is doing exactly what it was designed to do. The real problem is airflow.
Check it with no tools: run the dryer a few minutes, go outside to the vent flap, and hold your hand near it. You should feel a strong warm gust. Weak or barely there means the vent is restricted. To fix it, unplug the dryer (or shut the gas off and unplug), pull it out, disconnect the vent hose, and clear it with a hardware store vent brush all the way to the exterior flap, and make sure the hose is not crushed or kinked.
This is a Boston specific problem more than most places. Triple deckers and multifamily homes often have long vertical vent runs, sometimes shared risers between floors, so lint has farther to travel and more places to snag. The sneaky one on electric dryers: half your power is gone
This only applies to electric dryers, and it fools a lot of people. An electric dryer runs on 240 volts, which is two 120 volt legs of power. The motor and drum light need only one leg; the heating element needs both. So if one leg drops out, from a half tripped double breaker or a blown fuse in an older fuse box, the dryer spins and tumbles like nothing is wrong but never gets hot.
To check, go to your panel, find the dryer double pole breaker (two switches joined together), flip it fully OFF, then firmly back ON. A breaker can trip just enough on one side to kill the heat without looking tripped. Plenty of older Boston area homes still run fuse boxes rather than breakers, and there a single blown fuse on one leg does the same thing, so check both fuses. It is a thirty second test that saves a service call.
The blown thermal fuse
Every modern dryer has a thermal fuse, a small cheap safety part that sacrifices itself if the machine overheats. When it blows, most models cut the heat (some will not start at all). It does not reset, you replace it. Here is the part people skip and regret: a thermal fuse rarely blows for no reason, it blows because of restricted airflow. Replace the fuse without clearing the vent and you will be buying another one in a month. Fix the cause first. Testing takes a multimeter on continuity with the dryer unplugged; a good fuse shows continuity, an open reading means it is blown. The part is usually ten to fifteen dollars.
The heating element (electric dryers)
If you have an electric dryer, strong airflow, and a good thermal fuse, suspicion lands on the heating element, a coil of wire that glows hot like a space heater. Over years it can burn through and go open, and when it does the dryer runs perfectly but produces zero heat. Test it the same way, unplug and check the element for continuity. Replacement elements typically run thirty to seventy dollars and on most models it is a doable home repair, a handful of screws and a couple of wires. Photograph the wiring before you disconnect anything so you can put it back exactly.
Gas dryers: igniter, coils and the flame sensor
On a gas dryer the heat comes from a burner with a sequence that has to happen each cycle. An igniter glows bright orange, a flame sensor signals the gas valve coils to open, gas releases, and the hot igniter lights it.
- Igniter glows then dies, no flame? Usually weak or failed gas valve coils.
- Igniter never glows at all? The igniter itself may be burned out, or a fuse or thermostat earlier in the circuit.

Honest line in the sand: cleaning a vent and swapping a thermal fuse are fine to learn on. Gas components are not. The in between culprits
If you have cleared everything above, a few less common parts can be at fault: a failed cycling thermostat or high limit thermostat, a bad thermistor, or least likely a faulty timer or control board. All are testable with a multimeter, but at this point you are past the easy wins and into territory where someone who does this daily is worth the money.
