A washer that will not spin is usually a washer that will not drain, and the two problems share the same short list of causes. A machine has to pump the water out before it can spin, so standing water at the end of a cycle is the biggest clue. Most of the time it is a clogged pump or filter, a kinked drain hose, a tripped lid switch or door lock, or simply an unbalanced load, and several of those you can fix yourself. First, notice which problem you actually have, because it points you straight at the cause.
Start here: is there water left in the drum?
If the cycle ends with a tub full of water, you have a drain problem, and the spin failure is just a symptom, the machine will not spin on top of standing water. If the drum is empty but the clothes are soaked and were never wrung out, you have a true spin problem. Either way the causes below are the usual suspects, roughly in order.
1. The drain pump filter, check this first
Most front load washers, and many high efficiency top loaders, have a drain pump filter behind a small access panel at the bottom front. It catches coins, hair pins, lint and the occasional sock, and when it clogs the machine cannot drain, so it will not spin. Put a towel and a shallow pan down first, because water will come out. Open the panel, unscrew the filter slowly, and clear whatever is trapped. On a lot of no spin calls this is the entire fix, and it costs nothing.
2. The drain hose
Behind the machine, the drain hose can kink, or clog with lint and detergent sludge where it meets the standpipe. Pull the washer out, check the hose is not crushed, and make sure the standpipe itself is not backed up. This is worth extra attention in Boston. A lot of triple deckers and older multifamily homes run laundry to old, narrow basement drain lines that clog easily, so if two units share a line or the basement drain is sluggish, the washer is often not the real problem, the plumbing is.
3. The lid switch or door lock
A washer will refuse to spin if it does not believe the lid or door is closed. Top loaders use a lid switch that can wear out or break; front loaders use a door lock assembly. If yours clicks shut but the machine acts like it is open, or it will not start the spin at all, this is a common and moderate repair.
4. An unbalanced or overloaded drum
Modern washers will not spin up a load they sense is lopsided, to avoid banging themselves apart. A wad of towels on one side, or simply too much in the drum, can stop the spin. Open it up, redistribute the load, and try again. Overloading is one of the most common and most avoidable causes, especially with bulky bedding.
5. Too much detergent, suds lock
Using regular detergent, or too much of it, in a high efficiency machine creates a mountain of suds the pump cannot clear. The machine senses the suds and refuses to spin. Always use HE detergent in an HE washer, and less than you think you need. If you suspect suds lock, run a rinse and spin cycle with no detergent to clear it.
6. The drive belt or coupler
If the drum turns freely by hand but never spins under power, the drive belt (many front loaders) or the motor coupler (many older top loaders) may be worn or broken. These are mechanical parts with real labor involved and are usually the point where a technician earns the visit.

Clearing the pump filter, checking the drain hose, redistributing a load, and fixing suds lock are all safe to do yourself, and they solve a large share of no spin calls for free.
